$5 A Day Savings Plan | Craft Dictator

At the beginning of the year my mom and I were talking about ways to save money and she suggested a plan where you put $5 away a day.  She told me you could just take a way a latte or some fast food and eat at home.  She knows that I’m a sucker for some Starbucks so I thought this would be a great plan.  She gave me an old christmas jar she found on sale somewhere and we thought this would be a great jar to decorate.

I was just going to put how much I was saving on it but I wanted to cover up the snow man so I decided to decoupage it with maps.  I also went into excel and made a spread sheet of how much I would have total each day for 365 days.  I then decoupaged this all onto my jar.

The grand total for this year if I just put $5 in this jar will be over $1800!

I thought this could be a fun way to save up for a big trip next year or just a little nest egg.  I also made a print out with the whole year on it.  You can decoupage it on a jar or just put it in a box with your money.  I tried to put my jar in a place where I wouldn’t think about it during the week and try to spend the money!  If you would like to print the sheet out here is a link to download it!

I think this is a great way to start off the new year saving money!

$5 A Day Savings Plan — 37 Comments

  1. $5 a day is a doable amount so you won’t feel like it’s painful saving. But boy howdy! When you end the year with $1800 it’s going to be very tangible how a little change makes a big difference. :) Good luck!

  2. I love this. We are doing the 52 week savings challenge. I posted it on my blog. Maybe next year, we will step it out and do the $5 a day savings plan. Such a great idea and who wouldn’t love an “extra” $1800 at the end of the year.

  3. Saving a little each day is so much easier than trying to do it all at once or even one a month.

For me, it all started when I was a little girl. My father use throw is change into a big bottle at the end of each day to pay for summer camp for my brother and I. This was in the 1950’s so a quarter went a lot further back then. I use to throw my dollar bills into a big jar when I was saving for a vacation. Now that I am retired, I am back to loose change.

  4. Such a creative way to save! I love how you need to cover the jar! Me and my boyfriend are saving too though we don’t really track it, we just put $50 a week so we can save up for a condo in like few years. It’s fun, at least we have something to look forward to. :-)

  5. Great idea and I love the way you decorated your jar. The hardest thing for me to say “no” to is my Starbucks Venti Non Fat Chi Tea. At $4.27 each, that can really add up. Not to mention the calories. Thanks for sharing!
