I love to knit but I only knit when I am a passenger in the car or waiting for an appointment. When I am at home it is hard for me to sit that still. During this summer I have been knitting mittens. I am pretty much a two trick pony when it come to knitting, I only knit two things, hats and mittens. I like to knit those two because they are small, easy, and fast. I live in southeast Texas and mittens are not part of our everyday wardrobe even in the winter. A couple of the pairs are going to be presents but the remaining pairs are going to be donated. A previous church I attended has a mitten tree at Christmas that I could donate to but there are some other charities on the internet that collect mittens.

Since I have been blogging I am amazed at the talent that is on the internet. The first time I went on Pinterest I was blown away at the creativity. The thought that if all the folks, with all this creativity, could create for a cause, how much social change for the good could occur. As a young women in the Methodist church I was amazed by the stories about the women of the church in the 1860’s organizing to bring about social change when they themselves had very little power. Just think about all the changes the lowly “bake sale” has made through history. One of my goals for 2014 is to use a little of my creativity to make a difference for others.

When I worked as a teacher, every year we had a “mitten tree” where parents and students would bring in hats and mittens and place them on the tree to be donated to those in need. That’s wonderful creativity to make a difference for others!

Those are so cute! Do you also create fingerless mittens?

I haven’t done the fingerless mittens. I have been looking at patterns for convertible mittens. The finger cover flips backward so you can use your fingers and then flip it back. Thanks for coming by.

Love the mittens and that you are making them for a good cause. I have a friend that spends her spare time crocheting beanies for preemies.

The hats are pretty! I always wanted to learn how to knit and now I regret why I did not pay attention in Arts and Crafts class in high school. I salute your generosity. You have a good heart.

I imagine this time of year that donating mittens to a charity would be welcomed warmly by most organizations. I love your creations.

What a lovely thing to do for your community and to participate in! I’ve never done anything like this, but if I knew how to knit, I’d definitely be knitting mittens for this. Who knows? Maybe it’s time for me to learn so I can pitch in and provide some warmth this chilly season.

I adore the idea of being a “car knitter!” I tried it years ago and found I lacked the patience but if I’m stuck sitting there anyway… and I could just keep a little bag of my stuff close at hand… hmmm. And then to have a whole pile of things to hang on my church’s mitten tree in the winter… I’m loving this!

So happy you ate using you talent for good and other people! I live in Alabama and the weather here has been very unpredictable with the rainy cold days to hot spring like afternoons, so gloves/mittens aren’t really used a lot. I would love to learn to knit and I like your work.

That’s so wonderful! In the past I have made and donated blankets to Project Linus, which provides blankets to children in need. Sadly, I never learned to knit.

Ohh, we need more of these. It’s not always as cold here but I sued to work at a low income school and could have used things like this for the students. Such a lovely idea.

Undeniably consider that which you said. Your favorite
justification appeared to be on the net the simplest factor to
bear in mind of. I say to you, I definitely get irked whilst other people consider concerns that they plainly don’t know about.
You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also
outlined out the entire thing with no need side-effects , people can take a signal.
Will likely be again to get more. Thank you

I grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio— COLD! I remember my mother, and later my mother-in-law, buying hats and mittens at Kresge’s to give to children that did not have any. They were inexpensive but made a huge difference. My mother-in-law had Alzheimer’s Disease, and in her later years, she would mistake fire hydrants for children and want to put hats and gloves on them :)Two amazing women that raised two adults who try our best to help others. My point is that OUR example is teaching OUR children and grandchildren now!

Great post– I am linking to it from my Christmas Eve post too
