The stockings above are what I dreamed my stockings would look like but I ran into a few roadblocks:

  1. When I began to search for sweaters to recycle into this project I realized that southeast Texas ,where last winter none of my plants outside died of frost, was probably not the best place to search for winter wear!
  2. The sweaters I found were not wool which meant they would not felt.
  3. I could not find any apple green sweaters!

I found a red and gray sweater at a garage sale and changed my game plan.

Not apple green, not all wool and not cable knit!

This is the first attempt.  As you can see things did not go well. The sweater strips stretched and were difficult to sew.
Off to google I went and found a tutorial that I had used when I made a quilt.  I used the same technique to sew the sweater strips to a muslin stocking shape.  It came out much better the second time. The tutorial can be found at: http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/10/string-quilt-block-tutorial/.

The finished product.  You will have to wait to see all the stockings hung by the chimney with care later.

  1. Creative idea! The directions given were easy to understand. Also, the idea of using corduroy or flannel as a backing, without the batting, is a good option for a coastal climate.

  2. How cute and creative! I have been wanting to try to make my own stockings, but am not too sure about how well I can sew. Still, you make it seem so easy so i think I am going to give it a try! This came out great, and I cannot wait to see them all together!
