Planning for Christmas

I think the hardest part of Christmas is planning ahead so that I don’t get caught in a bind and overspend or even worse buy presents with out forethought and planning. That trap of just buying something to have to wrap. This year as I have shopped at Goodwill I have bought containers that only needed a paint job to be fabulous.  None of them cost more than a dollar, which is as cheap as a gift bag from the dollar store. Now they are ready to be filled with goodies to share.

During Spring Break I visited a Goodwill store near my home.  They had lots of small items on sale. I found this beauty and with the discount it cost $.25. Yes, only a quarter.  It was stained and had a large apple and checkerboard painted on it.  At some point it had a lid but it was long gone by the time we found each other. It is 12 inches wide and 10 inches high. It would be perfect on a desk or in a bathroom.  This was such a quick project because all I did was sand off the apple and other painting, prime and paint it.  It had holes at the top on each side.  I left the holes so someone could easily hang it with cute ribbon.  The hardware I added to the front was extras from another project.  I added a bow.  I have no idea why I tied a bow on it.  I may remove it but it just seemed right that it had a bow for it’s first photo.

Christmas Update

This lovely find is now ready to be gifted to someone I care about.  I added some cute note pads and stationary from Michael’s and am ready for Christmas. Bottom Line: .25 cents for the container+ $5 for the stationary= a great gift that someone will actually use and did not break the Christmas budget.

This is another find that you will be seeing used for Christmas giving soon. The apples are long gone and it will be filled with Christmas goodness.

I have been blogging so often about the wonderful, junky finds that come from the Restore that I have not shown much love to Goodwill.  I love to go to Goodwill.  They have such a wide variety of good junk just waiting to be given a second chance.  Not long ago I found this wonderful find.  It is solid wood and had been painted pink and blue with a goose on it (think 1985).  Yesterday I decided it was it’s turn to get a makeover.  I painted with my favorite red.  I can’t tell you the color name.  I took an old Ralph Lauren sweater to Lowes and they mixed this red for me.  I call it Ralph Lauren Red.  I think I went with red because it looks like fall.  When I tire of it in front of the fireplace I plan on using it to store sewing notions.  It would also make a cute tool box.  Thanks again Goodwill, you made my day!

  3. One of great things I love about being a crafter, we’ll pick up things knowing we can give it a new life. We’ll buy things others will just pass by, thank heavens they do. I have so much fun finding “jewels” at Habitat, Salvation Army, Goodwill, a little thrift store in town close to us. I love that you just never know what you’ll find. I love what you did with the containers you found. They look like they’re brand new, great job on all of them.
What I can’t find hubs makes for me out of pallet wood. We have a few piles of them out in yard, not hubs favorite job taking them apart. He’ll take a few apart to get a stock pile then puts it off til he needs more pieces. I like to make little signs with small pieces of lumber. Love making signs with pallet wood we have as it’s thinner than other lumber, not so heavy to hang on a wall.
    Happy Thanksgiving

  4. Great way to keep gift giving real and personal without overspending! I try to buy gifts throughout the year and keep them in my gift box so Christmas doesn’t get so overwhelming. I need to work on doing more creative and personal things like this! Thanks for linking up to Let’s Get Real!
