On Tuesdays Throughout the Christmas Season we will be doing a Christmas Container Series.  You can see last weeks Cookie Container here. You can also check out our Christmas Projects Page here. For my Christmas Container this week I decided to make Hand Embroidered Gift Bags!

I started off with tracing out my design on muslim.  I used one of the pins that disappears with water to trace it. I cut out about a 12″x12″ square because I wanted it to fit in my hoop.  I got this awesome patter from Sublime Stitching!  I love their stuff and have a couple projects coming up with some of the designs! :)

I then embroidered it.  I just did outlines instead of filling in everything.  I’ve found that filling in every part is so time consuming and I just wanted these to be an easy and fun gift bag!

I then laid out my big squares and started cutting them down because I didn’t want them that big.

I decided to make them 8″ x 5″.  This seemed like a great size for a bag to me!

I wanted to line this so the first thing I did was take another piece of muslim the same size as what I cut my embroidery out as and then put them wrong sides together.  Then I seamed around the edges except for the top because I want this to stay open.

I did the same for the lining.  I took two 8×5 pieces of the lining and put them wrong side together and seamed around the edges except for the top.  I also left a hole about an inch open on the bottom that way I could pull everything through.

I then put one the embroidered bag inside the lining bag.  I made sure that the right sides were facing each other.  So, the embroidery faced the pattern side of the fabric.  I then seamed around the open holes to sew them together.  I couldn’t do this on my machine because these are smaller bags so I did it by hand.

Once this was done I pulled it through the hole so that you could see the right sides.

I then stitched up the small hole on the bottom of the lining and put the lining in the bag.

I will be putting some homemade vanilla that I will be posting about later in these cute little bags!

I absolutely love the way they turned out.  I’ve made about 5 and have some more to make also!  I will be putting some of these in my etsy shop once I get a couple more made!

  1. Gah, your header. I don’t know if I already told ya this but I love love love it. Love it so much I didn’t even bother to put proper punctuation in that previous sentence. Those bags are so cute. Maybe one day I’ll get unlazy and get my Momma to teach me needlepoint.

    • ha ha thanks! I got the clip art from an etsy shop so I can’t take all the credit for my header! And needlepoint is pretty easy. Though I’m not a perfectionist about it so someone who is really into needlepoint might hate me!
